LEXINGTON, Ky. — The University of Kentucky track and field team earned eight All-Southeastern Conference selections including two first team, two second team and four All-SEC freshmen honors for their performances at the 2010 SEC Outdoor Championships, the league office announced.
All-SEC team selections are based off student-athletes performances at the 2010 SEC Outdoor Championships. First-team honors are given to the champion of each event and second-team honors for second position on the podium. All-SEC freshman awards are awarded to the top freshman finisher in each event.
The first of two All-SEC first-team selections for Kentucky was awarded to Rondel Sorrillo for his SEC Outdoor Championship in the 200-meter dash at LaPorte Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn. Sorrillo, a six-time All-American, earned an All-SEC honor for the first time in his award-packed career. On the way to his SEC title in the 200m dash the senior turned in a season-best mark of 20.54, just .09 seconds away from his own 200m school record.
The second All-SEC first-team honor was earned by Colin Boevers, on the heels of his SEC Outdoor Championship in the discus throw. As the sole male thrower for the Wildcats, the junior claimed his first SEC title with a throw of 55.41m/181-09. Both achievements are the first of Boevers career.
Patrick McGregor and Kristin Smith earned All-SEC second-team honors for their outstanding performances in the hammer throw and 1,500m run, respectively. Fighting for her second SEC Championship of the year after winning the weight throw at the SEC Indoor Championships, Smith fell just short behind Nikola Lomnicka of Georgia with a throw of 61.81m/202-09. McGregor, in his inaugural season with Kentucky, earned All-SEC second team as well as All-SEC freshmen team honors for his magnificent performance in the 1,500m run with a time of 3:51.57. These were McGregor’s second and third All-SEC honors this year after his first selection after the SEC Indoor Championships.
Cally Macumber earned two All-SEC honors for Kentucky as the top freshman in both the women’s 5,000m and 10,000m run. Macumber finished 14th with a time of 17:13.66 and 11th with a time of 37:54.56 in the 5,000 and 10,000m run respectively. The freshman completes the trio, receiving All-SEC honors in cross country, indoor, and outdoor track and field.
Darryl Bradshaw was named to the All-SEC freshmen team for the first time in his young career as the top freshman performer in the 110m hurdles. With a personal-best time of 14.55 (-0.1), Bradshaw finished the SEC Championships in seventh place collecting two points for the Wildcats.
The UK track and field team currently is participating at the 2010 NCAA East Regional in Greensboro, N.C.
