KNOXVILLE, Tenn., –
The Kentucky Track and Field team wrapped up the final day of the SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships with the men having a last day point surge and the women’s throwers ringing in the remaining points for the women.
On the final day of the SEC Championships the inclement weather delays continued to ensue. The event was suspended early in the day, essentially before the majority of the events had even begun. The suspension would be lifted after the storm rolled through only for competition to be halted once again when torrential rains and lightning returned.
The reoccurring theme of weather delays that plagued the SEC Outdoor Championships did not stop the Kentucky track and field team from competing against their conference opponents, nor from putting crucial points on the board.
Beginning the day with an outright victory was Junior Colin Boevers in the men’s discus. Boever’s throw of 55.41m (181 feet, 9 inches) earned him the top spot on the podium and ten crucial points for the men’s team.
“This was huge for me after my shot put performance yesterday,” Boevers says. “Not putting any points on the board in the shot put was a big disappointment for me. I am happy to win today as these ten points mean a lot to the team and I hope it can build some momentum.”
The men and women’s 4×100-meter-relay teams each contributed a point to the team scores. Both finishing in eighth place, the men’s team ran 39.93 and the women a 46.06.
Freshman Patrick McGregor followed the relay race with a gutsy performance in the 1,500m run. McGregor began the run in the middle of the pack where he stayed for the majority of the race only to fight for position towards the front in the final 200 meters. He’d make his way into second place where he’d maintain position as he crossed the finish line. McGregor finished with eight points and a time of 3:51.57.
Josh Nadzam fought next to teammate McGregor for point contention in the men’s 1,500m run and succeeded grabbing the eighth place spot. Nadzam’s time of 3:53.97 helped push the men’s team score to 20 total points.
Darryl Bradshaw continued the push for the men’s score when he claimed sixth place in the men’s 110m hurdles. After overcoming a slight stumble, Bradshaw managed to earn three points and a time of 15.46 (0.5).
Sprinter Rondel Sorrillo claimed the second victory for the Cat’s of the day in the men’s 200m dash finals. Sorrillo accelerated in the last 100 meters to move from second place into the top spot. Along with his 200m dash championship title, Sorrillo moves into a tie for second in UK’s record books with his new 100m dash personal record of 10.19 set today. Sorrillo notched the ninth best time in the country and third place on the championship podium, earning a total of 16.25 points for the cats.
Racing in a fast paced 800m final, junior Sharif Webb ran his way to a fourth-place finish and second in Kentucky’s all-time record books. Webb’s time of 1:47.64 seats him in ninth place nationally.
In the women’s shot put, Jennifer Svoboda and Mary Angell advanced to the finals for the Cats. Svoboda’s final throw of 15.77m (51 feet, 9 inches) moved her from fifth to third place, earning six solid points while proving to be Svoboda’s furthest throw of the 2010 outdoor season.
Mary Angell rounded out the shot put field, finishing in eighth place and moving the women’s team score to 44 points. Angell’s best throw came at her second to last attempt when she threw 14.73m (48 feet, 4 inches).
The team wrapped up championship competition with both the men and women’s team finishing in tenth place, scoring a total of 44 points each.
