Track & Field

KNOXVILLE, Tenn., –

The third day of SEC Outdoor Championships proved to be an suspenseful one as competition was continuously delayed for four and half hours only to resume at 10:30 p.m. ET with all of Saturday’s originally scheduled events.

After suspending meet competition for approximately four and half hours at Tom Black Track due to inclement weather, the Kentucky track and field team resumed in full force.

The athletes weathered the storm many of them advancing to tomorrow’s finals. Even though the weather seemed to affect many of the day’s performances, Coach John Mortimer says the team had many positive contributions.

“Having two of our distance men in the finals is a positive step, not only for those individuals but for the team as a whole,” Coach Mortimer says. “I am proud of our senior women, Andrea (Halasek-Richardson) and Katherine (Peterson) who both set goals to score points and contribute to the team and succeeded.”

Distance runners Patrick McGregor and Josh Nazdam were the first back on the track for the Cats after the delay and both advanced past the preliminary round of the men’s 1,500-meter run. McGregor finished with the second-fastest time with 3:48.74 and Nadzam followed in ninth running a 3:49.28.

Darryl Bradshaw followed suite as he hurdled his way to the men’s 110m hurdles final. His time of 14.55 gives him a new personal record and moves him into seventh place in UK’s all top times’ record book.

Senior Rondel Sorrillo set a new season record as he qualified for the men’s 100m dash finals. Winning his heat with a time of 10.32, Sorrillo finished third overall in the preliminary round.

Placing in the top three in the women’s discus, junior Mary Angell threw a preliminary attempt of 50.05m (164 feet, 2 inches) to add six more valuable points to the team score.

Senior leader Andrea Halasek-Richardson earned four points for the women’s team score with her fifth-place finish in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase. Running in the last event for the Cats of the day, Halasek-Richardson’s time of 10:44.55 earned her the point contribution.
