LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky track and field team travels north for the 25th Jesse Owens Track Classic on Friday and Saturday, April 30-May 1 in Columbus, Ohio.
Friday’s events begin at 2 p.m.ET with select field events and conclude with the men’s 1,500-meter run at 10:35 p.m. ET. Competition will resume Saturday, May 1 at 11 a.m. ET with the men and women’s long jump, with running events beginning at 12 p.m. ET.
The Ohio State University will host the meet with competition taking place at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Coming off of a weekend comprised of relay events, national exposure and international greats at the Penn Relays, the Cats will return to traditional meet competition this weekend.
“This time of season is tough with the final crunch of the school year and the conference meet on the verge,” Coach Don Weber says. “This is one of the final meets that our athletes will compete in before the South Eastern Conference Championships and it will require our team to stay focused with all of the things going on off the track.”
After the Penn Relays meet, freshman Cally Macumber earned her second SEC Freshman of the Week award of the season. Competing against the best runners at the collegiate level, Macumber finished 13th out of 36 competitors with a time of 16:43.61 in the women’s 5,000m run.
Senior David Banks earned one of the two team victories for the Cats, finishing first overall with a jump of 50-5.50/15.38m in the men’s long jump.
The second victory came from the women’s 4x400m relay team. In front of a crowd of 54, 301 fans, Jazmyn Shorter, Brittany Cabbler, Precious Nwokey and Jenna Martin claimed victory by running a winning time off 3:37.83.
Competing alongside the Cats at the classic are the following nationally ranked opponents, No. 5 Virginia Tech, No. 15 Penn State, No. 25 Illinois and No. 31 Indiana.
