ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Kentucky women’s tennis team was knocked out in the first round of the Southeastern Conference Tournament falling 4-0 to South Carolina on Thursday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the University of Georgia campus.
South Carolina claimed the doubles point claiming wins on court Nos. 2 and 3. UK’s doubles team of Megan Broderick (Tampa, Fla.) and Christine Johnston (Columbus, Ohio) fell to Miljana Jocic and Anya Morgina 8-5 at No. 2. Elle Coldiron and Nicole Scates, both of Lexington, were blanked by Adriana Pereira and Madeleine Saari-Bystrom 8-0 at No. 3 doubles. Play was unfinished at No. 1 doubles with the match between UK’s Caroline Lilley (Portland, Ore.) and Minnette Pienaar (Graff-Reinet, South Africa) and the No. 18-ranked South Carolina duo of Ana Marija Zubori and Dijana Stojic knotted at 7-7.
The Gamecocks stretched their advantage to 3-0 with wins at Nos. 5 and 6 singles. USC’s Pereira defeated Coldiron 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 while Saari-Bystrom posted a 6-0, 6-2 win over Scates at No. 6.
The clinching match for the Gamecocks came at No. 1 singles where Megan Broderick battled Zubori, who ranks No. 48 in singles. Zubori earned the 6-4, 6-2 straight-sets victory.
The remaining singles matchups were left unfinished after the deciding match. Lilley stood at 6-5 with No. 108 Stojic at No. 2 singles. Johnston was close to splitting sets at 1-6, 5-3 at No. 3 singles. In No. 4 singles, Pienaar trailed Jocic 6-4, 2-0 at No. 4 singles.
Kentucky finishes its season at 2-20.
