LEXINGTON, Ky. — Fresh off an impressive 4-0 week where it posted victories over three ranked teams, the University of Kentucky men’s tennis teams returns home to conclude the non-conference portion of its 2010 season Tuesday with matches against Lipscomb and Centre. The Lipscomb match is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET with the match against Centre set for 6 p.m. ET.
Kentucky (20-7, 7-3 Southeastern Conference) is coming off wins over No. 13 Illinois, Murray State, No. 51 LSU and No. 59 Arkansas last week to claim head coach Dennis Emery’s 11th 20-win season and the first for UK since 2005. The Wildcats 4-3 victory over Illinois on Wednesday marked the fifth time this season that Kentucky has beat a top-16 team, a significant achievement.
Sophomore Eric Quigley played brilliant tennis all week for Kentucky, going 4-0 in singles including three wins over players ranked in the top 60. Quigley scored a thrilling straight-sets victory over No. 35 Dennis Nevolo of Illinois 6-4, 7-5, while claiming a 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 over No. 34 Neal Skupski of LSU. A native of Pewee Valley, Ky., Quigley posted his third win over a ranked opponent with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over No. 60 Christopher Nott of Arkansas.
Junior Alberto Gonzalez went 3-0 in singles for the Wildcats, while freshman Anthony Rossi went 3-1 and sophomores Graeme Dyce and Alex Musialek went 2-1 in singles. Kentucky also claimed two doubles points last week, both of which were scored against SEC teams.
Lipscomb and Centre come into the match Tuesday on a losing note with Lipscomb losing six matches in a row and Centre on a two-game losing streak. Both matches Tuesday will be played at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex.
