LEXINGTON, Ky. — The University of Kentucky track and field team travels to Louisville’s Cardinal Park not as an adversary but as a teammate to the in-state rival when they take on Indiana and Notre Dame in the Border Battle ‘Kentuckiana’ on Saturday.
UK looks to build on outstanding performances that were spread across three different venues and included three wins, a school record and multiple personal bests.
The women’s 4x400m relay team that featured senior Jenna Martin, sophomore Jazmyn Shorter, junior Brittany Cabbler and sophomore Precious Nwokey took down a 15-year-old school record by more than two seconds at the Pepsi Florida Relays on Saturday. This group of athletes now holds the women’s 4x400m relay record for both the outdoor and indoor season, which they also broke this year.
Sharif Webb turned in a dominating performance at the Florida Relays as he finished atop the pack in the 800m run with a time of 1:47.75 besting the field by more than half a second. Webb’s time not only won him the race but has him ranked at the top of the Southeastern Conference standings and second nationally, according to the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, trailing only Charles Jock of UC Irvine by .29 seconds.
Junior David Banks turned in the best performance of his career at the Texas Relays in the triple jump with a mark of 51-01/15.57m which ranks fourth in the SEC and 11th nationally. Banks’ previous best was set at this weekend’s venue, Cardinal Park, last outdoor season during the NCAA Mideast Regional with a mark of 50-11/15.52m. His mark of 51-01 is three quarters of an inch away from the school record set 29 years ago by Bethel Ward.
Kristin Smith earned her second win in two tries to open the outdoor season perfect in the hammer throw competition at the Tiger Track Classic. Smith now stands second in the SEC and ninth overall nationally in the hammer throw.
Also at the Tiger Track Classic, Ashley Muffet finished second in the discus throw ahead of all her collegiate competitors. Two Wildcats rank in the top 25 in the discus throw, Muffet in fourth and junior Mary Angell is ranked 19th. Muffet also led two other Wildcats who finished in the top four of the women’s shot put.
Although the Border Battle ‘Kentuckiana’ matches two of the most competitive rivals, on Saturday they will have to put their differences aside and join forces to take down Indiana’s pride.
Several field events will kick off the competition at 10:30 a.m. ET followed by running events at 2:00 p.m. ET with the women’s 5,000m run. Follow live results at UofLsports.com
