LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kristin Smith, a newly crowned Southeastern Conference Indoor Champion, picked up right where she left off and in her first outdoor competition of the year earned a victory in the women’s hammer throw Friday.
Smith defeated twelve other athletes including teammate Heather Smith with a throw of 195-04/59.54m on her fourth attempt in the hammer competition. Kristin Smith is the Kentucky record holder in the hammer throw with a mark of 209-02.
Heather Smith, coming off a victory in the hammer throw last weekend in Orlando, finished fifth with a throw of 171-01/52.16 on her final attempt to secure her top five finish.
In the women’s shot put, Jennifer Svoboda finished second behind Middle Tennessee State’s Brittany Cox with a throw of 49-01.75/14.98m.
Colin Boevers was the lone male field event athlete to compete for UK and finished second in the discus throw with a final long mark of 169-06/51.67m.
In addition to these throwing events the Wildcats also competed in select distance events which included three top five finishes in the women’s 3,000 meter steeple chase. Lindsey Petri led the way with a time of 11:03.49 followed closely by Andrea Halasek-Richardson and Claire Laverty with times of 11:16.87 and 11:43.44 respectively.
In the men’s 5,000m run, Jeremy Zagorski took the second spot with a time of 15:07.18 to close out competition for Kentucky.
The Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by Georgia Tech offered more stringent competition in comparison to UCF’s Black and Gold Challenge which the Wildcats competed in last week but the results turned in were just as impressive.
The Wildcats will travel to Gainesville, Fla., April 2-3 for the Florida Relays as the outdoor season begins to pick up.
