LEXINGTON, Ky. — Ole Miss All-American southpaw Drew Pomeranz carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and tossed six shutout innings against 20th-ranked Kentucky, as the No. 19 Rebels scored a 9-0 series-opening win, on a picture-perfect Friday night at Cliff Hagan Stadium.

Kentucky (14-4) suffered a loss in the first Southeastern Conference game of the year, with Pomeranz outdueling UK lefthander Logan Darnell, who didn’t allow a run until the fourth inning. Pomeranz (3-0) was brilliant throughout the game, retiring the first eight hitters he faced, not allowing a hit until the sixth inning and his first base runner in the third inning. The Ole Miss pitching staff combined to one-hit the Wildcats, with reliever Eric Callender tossing the final three innings without allowing a hit to pick up his third save of the year.

Ole Miss (14-4) rode a three-run frame in the fourth inning, added a run in the fifth and sixth inning, then busted open the game with a four-run seventh inning, to stretch its lead to an unreachable mark with Pomeranz on the bump. Offensively for the Rebels, Taylor Hashman hit his second homer of the year and Matt Snyder, David Phillips and Kevin Mort added doubles, with Phillips charting two doubles and three RBI, going 3-for-4 at the dish.

Darnell (3-1) suffered the loss, his first of the season, after going six innings and allowing eight hits and five runs, walking two and striking out six. UK then turned to freshman right-hander Jordan Cooper who got roughed up in his first career SEC appearance, allowing four runs on three hits and two walks in his 0.2 inning of action. UK also used freshman right-hander Sam Kidd, who tossed the final 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit, striking out two.

Offensively, UK got one hit from senior centerfielder Keenan Wiley, who extended his hitting streak to 12 games, and a ninth-inning hit from Cory Farris. Andy Burns and Taylor Black each drew walks, with both adding a stolen base and Wiley stealing his fifth bag of the year. Burns had his hitting streak snapped at a career-long 13 games, while Chris Bisson snapped his streak at 12 games and Braden Kapteyn snapped his streak at 10 games.

The series will resume Saturday, with first-pitch at Cliff Hagan Stadium slated for 1 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live on the Big Blue Sports Network (radio), with Dick Gabriel calling the action. Fans in Lexington can hear the game live on WGVN 1580-AM and online at UKathletics.com.

The Rebels broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the top of the fourth inning, taking a 3-0 lead. Taylor Hashman led off and worked the count to 3-2 before muscling a solo homer into the “Cliff Dwellers” deck in right-centerfield. After Tim Ferguson grounded out, Snyder doubled into the left-centerfield gap. After Zach Miller drew a walk, Phillips popped a fly ball into leftfield, with the ball sailing just over the outstretched glove of Wright, scoring Snyder and moving Miller to third base. Taylor Hightower then grounded out to second base, scoring Miller.

UK had a chance to cut the lead in the bottom of the fourth as Burns drew a leadoff walk and stole second base with no out. Pomeranz responded by striking out the next three UK hitters to get out of the jam.

In the top of the fifth, Ole Miss added a run, as No. 9 hitter, Mort, doubled to lead off, poking one down the right-field line, scoring after Alex Yarbrough followed with a double of his own, painted down the right-field line.

The Rebels added a run in the top of the sixth, as Darnell hit Snyder to lead off and Phillips charted his second double in as many at bats, scoring Snyder, who was hustling from first base.

In the top of the seventh, the Rebels busted the game wide open, plating four runs on three hits and one UK error. Yarbrough reached on a one-out fielder’s choice and Tanner Matthis singled on a chopper hit to the shortstop. Ferguson then drew a walk to load the bases and Snyder singled into centerfield to score Yarbrough and Mathis. After Miller struck out and Ferguson scored on a wild pitch, Phillips notched his third RBI, poking a single through the left side to score Snyder.
