STATESBORO, Ga. — Senior Ben Fuqua posted a impressive 1-under-par and sits in a tie for ninth, leading the Kentucky men’s golf team after the first 18-holes of golf at Forest Heights Country Club in the Schenkel E-Z-GO Invitational on Friday. As a team, Kentucky (7-over-par, 295) sits in 12th place.
Fuqua, a native of Danville, Ky., played brilliant golf for much of the day on Friday. The senior posted three birdies for the round, birdying the par-4 eighth and 16th and the par-5 18th. Fuqua started his round on the 10th hole and parred the first three holes of the tournament. The UK veteran finished the first nine holes in style, by birdying two of the last three holes on the front nine. After posting a birdie on the eighth hole, Fuqua parred the final hole to claim the 1-under-par 71 score and sit tied for ninth after the first round.
Freshman Chase Parker and sophomore Mads Kristensen also had good opening days for Kentucky. Parker posted a 1-over-par 73 in the first round with one birdie and two bogeys, parring the rest of the course. The native of Augusta, Ga., sits in a tie for 30th.
Kristensen used a string of three-consecutive birdies to finish the day at 3-over-par with a 75. The native of Denmark, Kristensen started the round with back-to-back bogeys and bogeyed two of the first four holes on the back nine to sit at 4-over-par with five holes to play. The sophomore answered with three consecutive birdies, including a birdie two on the par-3 sixth hole. Kristensen bogeyed the final two holes to fall to 3-over-par, sitting in a tie for 52nd.
Senior Jordan Blann and junior Brian Belden wrap up the Kentucky scoring with Blann posting a 4-over-par 76 and Belden carding a 6-over-par 78 in the first round. Blann and Belden sit tied for 62nd and 72nd respectively.
Junior James Kania, playing as an individual in the tournament, is tied for 72nd at the tournament with a score of 6-over-par 78 in the opening round.
Florida’s Bank Vongvanij leads the individual tournament title, carding a 3-under-par 69. The team lead is held by North Florida at 285.
The second round of the tournament will begin on Saturday, with the third and final round on Sunday. Hole-by-hole scoring for the tournament is available on ukathletics.com through golfstat.com.
