LEXINGTON, Ky. – The 12th-ranked University of Kentucky gymnastics team dropped a 196.400-195.425 decision to No. 14 Auburn Friday at Memorial Coliseum.
The Wildcats (3-5, 1-4 Southeastern Conference) trailed throughout the meet, but won team titles on vault (49.075-49.050) and floor exercise (49.150-49.100). Auburn (2-4, 2-3 SEC) finished ahead of Kentucky on the uneven bars (49.100-48.900) and the balance beam (49.150-48.300).
“We need to step up and get back to matching the expectations we had for ourselves entering the year,” UK head coach Mo Mitchell said. “I was very disappointed in what we did tonight. We just didn’t do what we have been training to do. It wasn’t a Wildcat performance like it should have been.”
Senior Emily Green (Penfield, N.Y.) posted UK’s best individual score on any event, recording a 9.900 on the floor exercise to win title honors. It marked her second-best floor exercise score of the season. Green nailed a 9.950 effort at home against Florida on Jan. 22, a score that was tied for first in the SEC entering Friday.
UK junior Phylicia Reshard (West Chester, Ohio) tied a career-high with a 9.825 on the floor while senior Emily Rymer (Medina, Ohio) recorded a season-high 9.800 score.
UK junior Jasmine Minion (Memphis, Tenn.) and sophomore Whitney Rose (Frisco, Texas) shared title honors on the vault with matching scores of 9.875. Green took third place with a 9.850 score.
Auburn’s Allyson Sandusky won the bars title with a 9.900. UK sophomore Storey Morris charted a career-high 9.875 to take second place.
Auburn’s Rachel Inniss finished ahead of all scorers on the balance beam at 9.925. Sandusky took second with a 9.875. UK’s Morris took third, tying a career-high with a 9.825 score.
Auburn’s Kylie Shields won the all-around competition 39.175. Her teammate Krissy Voss took second with at 39.100. UK junior Andrea Mitchell finished third with a 9.800.
“We break our year into three parts, the first half of the season; the second half of the season and the postseason,” said Mo Mitchell, whose team reached the midway point of the season following the Auburn meet. “We’ll start the second part of our year next week with Ohio State and see if we can do better.”
Kentucky plays host to the Buckeyes on Friday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m.
