ATHENS, Ga. – The 11th-ranked University of Kentucky gymnastics team scored a season-high team score, but fell to No. 9 Georgia 197.200-195.550 Friday at Stegman Coliseum.
UK sophomore Whitney Rose (Frisco, Texas) won her fifth career vault title and third of the season with a 9.900, finishing ahead of teammate Emily Green (Penfield, N.Y.) and Georgia’s Cassidy McComb at 9.850. Green’s score was a season high.
“Whitney (Rose) is phenomenal,” UK head coach Mo Mitchell said. “She does a fantastic job on that event and I’m really proud of her and the team.”
Kentucky posted a season-high team score on the beam (48.650) and tied its season-best effort on the uneven bars (48.925).
The Wildcats started the evening off strong with a solid showing on bars, but fell to the Gym Dogs 49.450-48.925. The Wildcats were led by freshman Caitlyn Ciokajlo (Brooklyn, Mich.), who tied a career-high with a 9.850. Senior Jacque Behrendt (Franklin, Tenn.), senior Emilie Rymer (Medina, Ohio) and Morris all posted a 9.775 for the Wildcats. Georgia’s Kathryn Ding won the event with a 9.975.
Green led the Wildcats on the beam with a 9.825, while Morris followed with a 9.800. Mitchell and Hillary Ferguson (Richmond, Ky.) tied their season-high scores on the beam with a 9.725. Georgia’s Grace Taylor won the event with a 9.925 score, and the Gym Dogs took the event 49.400-48.650.
Kentucky entered the night ranked third in the nation on the floor exercise, but fell short to Georgia 49.400-48.825. Ferguson led UK with a 9.825, followed by Jasmine Minion (Memphis, Tenn.) and Green, who each posted 9.800 scores. Georgia’s duo of Courtney McCool and Shayla Worley shared title honors with a 9.950.
“We started off great on bars and vault,” Mo Mitchell said. “It’s the floor where we didn’t score as well as we could have and that kind of took the wind out of our sails. But we’re really strong on that event and we’ll bounce back next week.”
Kentucky returns home to Memorial Coliseum for the first of three consecutive home meets beginning Friday, Feb. 12, when the nationally ranked Auburn Tigers come to Lexington. The dual meet begins at 7 p.m. EST.
