BLACKSBURG, Va. — After claiming the doubles point and jumping ahead of No. 27 Virginia Tech 1-0, the No. 14 University of Kentucky men’s tennis team could not find an answer for the Hokies play in singles action, losing 5-2 inside the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on Wednesday.
Kentucky (2-1) got on the board early in the match, winning two of the three double matches over the Hokies (1-0) and posting its first doubles point of the young season. Doubles struck first in doubles when UK freshman Anthony Rossi and sophomore Alex Musialek won at the No. 3 position. The Frenchmen defeated Luka Soman and Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci 8-4. It was the first doubles win of the year for the Wildcat duo.
Following the loss of junior Alberto Gonzalez and senior Alex Lambropoulos in the No. 2 doubles position to Sebastien Jacques and Yoann Re, 8-4, UK sophomore Eric Quigley and junior Brad Cox sealed the doubles point. Ranked ninth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason poll, Quigley and Cox posted the clinching win 9-7 over Tech’s Will Beck and Patrick Daciek. The top-10 doubles team did not play together in UK’s first two matches.
The Hokies would respond early in singles play, tying the match at one when Beck defeated Lambropoulos at the No. 6 position 6-1, 6-3. UK would jump back on top when Rossi defeated No. 100 Jacques. Rossi defeated Jacques 6-0, 6-2, the third time this season he has won a set by the score of 6-0. The native of Martigues, France, is now 3-0 on the season winning all three matches in straight sets.
Virginia Tech took the lead for good when No. 75 Daciek gave Gonzalez his first loss of the season. Gonzalez would win the first set 6-3, but lose the second and third 6-4 and 6-3, respectfully. Fellow junior Cox would also suffer his fist singles loss, after being defeated in straight sets Tocci, 7-5, 6-4.
The Hokies would clinch the match at the No. 1 singles position when Virginia Tech’s senior leader Re took down Kentucky’s Quigley. Re, who participated in the 2009 NCAA Singles Championship, fell in the first set to NO. 8 Quigley, but responded in the final two sets to take the victory 5-7, 7-5, 6-2.
No. 39 Alex Musialek also fell in singles play. Like Quigley’s matches, Musialek won the first set of the match but could not find his groove in the second or third. Tech’s Soman defeated the Kentucky sophomore 6-7, 6-4, 6-1.
Kentucky returns to action this weekend when its host the ITA Kickoff weekend at the Hilary J. Boone Indoor Tennis Center. The Wildcats will host three nationally ranked teams.
