LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky swimming and diving teams will travel to Louisville on Saturday to meet the Cardinals in their annual meet. The first event is slated for a 2 p.m. ET start in Louisville.
This is the second meet in as many Saturdays for the Blue and White after the Wildcats traveled to Alabama last week. Kentucky’s women edged the Crimson Tide in an exciting finish last week. Trailing going into the final event, the Wildcats’ took the top two spots in the 400-freestyle relay to come back and defeat Alabama by a 150-148 margin. Kentucky’s men dropped a hard-fought meet 166-132.
Freshman Zach McGinnis had an impressive meet scoring a first-place finish in the 200-backstroke and a second-place tap in the 100-backstroke. He leads all UK swimmers in the backstroke events this season.
Kentucky’s sprinters continue to dominate as seniors Eric McGinnis, Alex Forbes and Elvis Burrows notched wins in short heats. McGinnis took first in the 50-free, with Forbes taking the 100-free. Burrows was the first finisher in the 100-butterfly.
Junior Chatham Penrod was the lone double-winner last week as she captured wins in both backstroke events and was named the SEC Swimmer of the Week for her efforts. Freshman Trina Winsor placed first in the 500-free and was second in the 1000-free and earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors.
The showdown with the Cardinals is an annual tradition for the two Kentucky schools. A season-ago in Lexington the UK women overcame a tough Cardinal squad and earned a win, while the Louisville men edged out the Wildcats. However, it was a meet to remember as the Blue and White achieved two new school records, eight athletes earned NCAA qualifying time standards, 19 times or scores broke into UK’s all-time top-10 charts and 29 career best times were achieved.
This season the stage is set for another incredible dual. Kentucky’s men are ranked No. 21 in the latest polls with Louisville coming in at No. 16. On the women’s side, the UK women were just out of the top-25 this week and the Cardinals are ranked No. 13 in the nation.
