SEC Indoors Day One Final Results

NORCROSS, Ga. — Kentucky sophomores No. 8 Eric Quigley and No. 39 Alex Musialek wasted no time in their first tournament of 2010 by advancing to the round of 16 in the 2010 Southeastern Conference Coaches’ Indoor Championships at the Racquet Club of the South on Friday.

Quigley, who is seeded third in the tournament, started the day with a first round bye. In the second round, the Pewee Valley, Ky., native squared off against Tennys Sandgren of Tennessee. Quigley quickly won the first set, 6-1, but would lose the second 3-6. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Ohio Valley Regional Indoor Champion would then come back in the third set to defeat Sandgren 6-3 and advance to Saturday’s round of 16.

Quigley will face Georgia senior Jamie Hunt on Saturday for a chance to go to the quarterfinals of the tournament. Last season, Hunt was a First Team All-SEC selection and finished the season with an ITA ranking of 62nd. Hunt was not ranked in the ITA preseason poll released earlier this month.

Musialek, who kicked the tournament of this morning with an 8 a.m. start, won his first match over Daniel Sanchez of Mississippi State, 6-2, 6-3. The UK sophomore then played at 1 p.m. against a fresh Adrian Forberg Skogeng of Ole Miss, who was given a bye to the second round after his first round opponent withdrew from the tournament. Musialek outlasted the Ole Miss freshman, winning the match 6-2, 7-5.

Musialek will play in the round of 16 on Saturday against the tournament’s sixth seed Javier Garrapiz of Georgia. The battle between the two underclassmen will pit Musialek against the 45th ranked Garrapiz.

Head coach Dennis Emery’s squad also won both of its doubles matches on Friday. Newcomer Anthony Rossi and Musialek teamed up to defeat Jonas Lütjen and Harry Fowler of Ole Miss in a thriller, 9-8. Rossi and Musialek will face Drake Berstein and Garrapiz who are seeded tied for fifth in the tournament. Bernstein and Garrapiz won their opening round match over Louis Cant and Christopher Doerr of Mississippi State, 8-2.

The Wildcats other doubles team of senior Alex Lambropoulos and junior Alberto Gonzalez also posted a win for UK on Friday. Lambropoulos and Gonzalez beat Mark Bowtell and Cody Loup of Louisiana State University. The UK tandem will square off against George Coupland and Artem Ilyushin of Mississippi State on Saturday. Coupland and Ilyushin received a bye in the first round and are seeded tied for fifth in the doubles competition.

Kentucky’s third double team, Quigley and junior Brad Cox, are seeded second in the tournament and received a first round bye. They will face Sekou Bangora, Jr. and Joseph Burkhardt of Florida in the second round.

Rossi, Gonzalez, Cox, Lambropoulos and redshirt sophomore Matt Davis also played in singles action. In his first match as a Wildcat, Rossi won against Tanner Stump of Mississippi State, 6-4, 6-3. Rossi then was defeated in the second round by the eighth seeded Bernstein of Georgia.

Gonzalez, Cox, Lambropoulos and Davis lost their opening round matches, although they will play in the consolation rounds on Saturday with a chance to play on Sunday.
