Men's Tennis

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky men’s tennis sophomore Eric Quigley was one of eight players honored earlier this week with a chance to play in the United States Tennis Association 2009 Infinite Energy Atlanta Challenge at the Racquet Club of the South, with a chance to win a wildcard into the 2010 Australian Open.

“The USTA continues to place more emphasis on college players as a part of player development,” Emery said. “Their inclusion of Eric in this event is indicative of that.”

The Kentucky sophomore was one in eight players selected by the USTA to play in the event. Quigley, the eighth seed in the tournament, was defeated in the first round by the No. 1 seeded Jesse Levine, who has an ATP ranking of 151. Levine made it all the way through the tournament to the championship round where he was defeated by Ryan Harrison.

“This was clearly a great opportunity for Eric. He is a very dangerous player,” Emery said. “As Davis Cup captain Patrick McEnroe said after the match, he has a lot of firepower that needs to be harnessed. This is all about gaining more experience in the arena.”

The USTA secured the wildcard deal by making an agreement with Tennis Australia. The agreement allowed the two national tennis federations to exchange wildcard draws for the 2010 Australian Open and 2009 U.S. Open.
