TULSA — After 12th-ranked Tulsa won the 2009 Conference USA Tournament with a 3-0 win over Marshall, Kentucky men’s soccer seniors George Davis IV and Dan Williams were named to the All-Tournament team, it was announced by the conference office.
Davis IV and Williams turned in splendid performances in the semifinal game against Tulsa Friday. A senior from Lima, Ohio, Davis IV came off the bench in the 67th minute and needed under two minutes to net his first goal of the season in the final game of his career. A senior midfielder, Davis IV played in 10 games in 2009, with a goals and an assist. In his two-year UK career, Davis IV totaled two goals and three assists in 26 games.
Williams, a native of Fairfax Station, Va., kept the Wildcats in the game with the powerhouse Golden Hurricane. The 6-foot-2 senior keeper, saved four shots in the contest despite playing through a host of injuries, including ankle, jaw and wrist injuries. Williams finished the year with a league-leading 0.78 goals-against average, allowing only 15 goals in 19 games, saving 54 shots and charting seven shutouts. In his storied four-year career, Williams ranks third in goals-against average (1.06), third in shutouts (21) and second in saves (221). With the 0.78 goals-against average in 2009, Williams totaled the fourth-best mark in single-season history.
Tulsa won the regular-season and conference tournament for the third consecutive year with a 3-0 pounding of Marshall in the final game. The Golden Hurricane received the lone C-USA bid to the 48-team NCAA Tournament.
Kentucky (13-6-0, 5-3-0 C-USA) started the conference season 0-3-0, with three consecutive losses at home. UK had to win its final five conference games to clinch a berth in the league tournament, including a 1-0 win over SMU in its final C-USA match of the year.
