LEXINGTON, Ky. — Led by sophomore Ethan Settlemires’ match-best 591 in air rifle and Ashley Jackson’s team-high 581 in smallbore, the Kentucky rifle team tallied a 4650-4614 win over the Ohio State Buckeyes, on Sunday at UK’s Barker Hall.

“I think we had a good day,” UK head coach Harry Mullins said. “Our performances are really coming around but our numbers are not there to match them yet. If we keep working hard the next few months we will close the gap on that. We did have 10 out of 12 shooters break 580 in air rifle and seven break 570 in smallbore, which is getting closer to our goal.”

Settlemires led the way for UK in air rifle, notching a 591, to complement his 578 in smallbore. Senior All-American Tom Csenge added a 590 in air rifle and a 577 in smallbore, while Jackson charted 588 in air rifle. Freshman Katie Fretts contributed a 586 in air rifle on the first-team for UK.

“On the personal record front we had (freshman) Stacy Wheatley break 581 today. I am really proud of how hard she has been working and the effort that she gives. Overall, it was a good weekend and we are looking forward to getting back to the range next week and shooting more 10s.”

Sophomore Megan English had a 588 in air rifle and a 570 in smallbore, with Logan Fox adding a 583 in air rifle and a 571 in smallbore. Heather Greathouse had a 582 in air rifle and a 571 in smallbore.

UK returns to action Saturday Nov. 21, facing defending NCAA Champion West Virginia in Morgantown, W.Va.

“I think that we will work hard these next two weeks and try to get ready for our next test which is West Virginia,” Mullins said. “They are a very good team and we will have to bring more than our best game to give them a good fight.

“The fun part about this match was that we had about 15 of our former shooters in with their families and they were there for the match,” Mullins said. “It was really touching for me to have that many of our past shooters here and for them to get to watch the future that they helped create.”
