TULSA, Okla. – The University of Kentucky men’s tennis team continues its fall schedule at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championships, hosted by the University of Tulsa, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center, beginning Friday.
The Championships tourney lasts nine days consisting of three inter-linked singles draws and two dependent doubles draws. The pre-qualifying singles tournament begins Saturday with as many as 256 players, including two Wildcats. Athletes must advance three rounds to make one of the 16 slots that move on to the subsequent qualifying draw of 128. The final 16 of the singles qualifying draw advance to play in the concluding 64-man main draw.
Two UK players, junior Alberto Gonzalez and senior Alex Lambropoulos, play in the three-day pre-qualifier of the Championships beginning Saturday.
After the weekend, three more Wildcats will join the competition after the pre-qualifying round. Sophomore Eric Quigley, ranked No. 70 in the fall ITA rankings, will play as part of the 64-man qualifying tournament along with junior Brad Cox and sophomore Alex Musialek.
On the doubles side, Gonzalez and Musialek will pair up in the 64-team qualifying tournament. The Wildcat duo would have to win three matches to advance to the doubles main draw.
The No. 24 doubles tandem of Cox and Quigley gained automatic entry into the 32-team doubles main draw that begins Thursday.
