ROME – Senior Elvis Burrows began the 2009 World Championships with a bang when he placed 26th overall in the world in the 50-butterfly on the first day of the event.

Burrows, representing his native country of the Bahamas, entered the meet with a seeded time of 24.47 in the event. Kentucky’s senior turned in a stellar performance in his first event of the Championships.

Burrows tapped in a career-best time of 23.74 for his 26th place finish.

He will compete in three more events this week at the international competition. Burrows is slated to appear in the 50- and 100-freestyles and the 100-fly later in the week.

Wednesday he will take to the pool in the 100-free with a seeded time of 52.43. Thursday, he will appear in the 100-fly with a time of 54.43. Finally, on Friday he takes to the water in the 50-free after turning in a seed time of 23.19 in the event.
