NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. – Six current and former Kentucky golfers enter the final round of competition at the 2009 American Express Kentucky Women’s Open today at Champions Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Ky.
Sophomore Ashlee Rose, a native of Nicholasville, Ky., leads the pack of Cats with a 1-over-par 73. She stands at fifth place behind leader Leah Wigger (66) and four others at 72. Rose tees off today at 11:18 a.m. EDT with fellow Wildcat Kristin Vincent. With a first-round 74, Vincent stands alone in sixth place.
Recent Kentucky graduate, Mallory Blackwelder, resumes play today tied for eighth place after shooting a 76. She tees off today at 11:09 a.m.
Incoming freshman Betsie Johnson and sophomore Laura McGehee tee off together at 10:22 a.m. after both carded a 79 on the opening day of play. Sophomore Megan Moir begins the second round at 10:06 a.m., after posting a first-round 82.

Hurwitch Reaches Semifinals at Virginia Women’s Amateur Championship
DANVILLE, Va. — Kentucky senior Sara Hurwitch advanced to the semifinals of the 84th Virginia State Golf Association Women’s Amateur Championship, where she was defeated by Lauren Greenlief in 19 holes on July 9 at Danville Golf Club in Danville, Va.
Hurwitch earned the 18th seed in the Championship Flight after shooting a 78 in the first round of stroke play. She won in the opening round of match play with a 4 and 2 victory, clinching the match with a birdie on the par-3 No. 16.
In the round of 16, Hurwitch earned another victory, finishing 2-up. She advanced to the semifinals of the tournament after topping Alexa Boucher in the quarterfinals 1-up.
Hurwitch faced Lauren Greenlief in the semifinals, losing to Greenlief in 19 holes. The match was back-and-forth through the front nine, but Greenlief went 2-up through 14 holes. Hurwitch came back to square the match with birdies on No. 15 and No. 16, and the golfers stayed equal through the end of the round. To end the match, Greenlief birdied the par-4 No. 1, while Hurwitch finished with a par.
Earlier in the season, Hurwitch faced Greenlief at the Virginias Women’s Stroke Play Championship held June 16-18. Greenlief, the champion of the 54-hole event, finished with a 210, while Hurwitch placed third (214).
Last season for the Wildcats, Hurwitch competed in eight tournaments and finished with a 78.3 stroke average. A transfer from Central Florida, the 2008-2009 season was her first with Kentucky.
