LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Wildcats keep finding success during the Fifth Third Bank Tennis Tournament at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center. Junior Megan Broderick and sophomore Caroline Lilley paired together as a wildcard for the first round of main draw doubles. Broderick and Lilley upended the No. 1 seed of Marshona Washington and Yi Chen, 1-6, 6-2, 12-10.

After a slow start to the first set the Kentucky players rallied back in the second set. Washington and Chen took the first game but after bringing the match to one-all, Broderick and Lilley never relinquished the lead for a convincing 6-2 result.

A super tie-breaker was used for the third and deciding set. The Wildcats remained a step ahead of their opponents at 5-4 until the tables made an unfortunate turn and Chen and Washington made a rally of their own for the win. Chen and Washington stayed on top, keeping Broderick and Lilley just beyond reach. But Kentucky’s own couldn’t be kept down and they went ahead 11-10, then 12-10 to secure the win and upset the No. 1 seed.

Washington and Chen are ranked No. 244 in the world.

Broderick and Lilley will play wildcard duo Courtney B. Dolehide and Amanda Fink Thursday.

Broderick will also be playing in tomorrow’s main draw for singles.
