COLLEGE STATION, Texas –
After scoring 13 team points to place 19th overall, the No. 15 Kentucky men’s track and field team achieved the fourth-highest point total in school history on the final day of competition at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships inside Texas A&M University’s Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium in College Station, Texas, Saturday.
The 2009 Indoor Championships marked the 20th time in UK history that the men’s team accumulated points at the season’s final meet, 13 of which were accomplished under the direction of head coach Don Weber. The Wildcats’ finish and point total were the best since 1996 when Kentucky posted 22 points to finish in a tie for seventh nationally.
Junior Rondel Sorrillo added four of those points on the final day UK tally, dashing out of the blocks in lane one of the 60m dash final to place fifth overall in a time of 6.63, a 0.02 second improvement over his preliminary time on Friday.
In the men’s 4x400m relay freshman Justin Austin ran a 47.00 split in the first leg. Senior Jose Acevedo ran a 46.92 split on the second leg and handed off to senior Brandon Austin who clocked in with a 48.03 split. Sorrillo ran the anchor leg in a time of 47.22 for a team time of 3:09.15 and an 11th-place finish overall.
On the first day of competition, Sorrillo broke the 200m dash school record with a time of 20.72 to earn the Cats six team points. Senior Chase Madison added three team points in the men’s shot put with a personal-best throw of 62-1.
Oregon won the men’s competition with 54 points.
On the women’s side, senior Ashley Trimble set the UK varsity record in the women’s pentathlon for the third time this season at her final career indoor meet with 3,997 points on Friday.
Tennessee won the women’s championship collecting 42 points.
