BATON ROUGE, La. – The University of Kentucky women’s golf team concluded the second round of the LSU Golf Classic in ninth place on Saturday at the University Club of Baton Rouge.
“Conditions in Baton Rouge were very difficult today,” head coach Myra Blackwelder said. “Heavy rains overnight forced the tournament into a half hour delay this morning. The grounds crew did a phenomenal job to get the course ready for play before afternoon rains turned the fairways into casual water.
“Mallory Blackwelder turned in a gritty one-over-par performance to lead the Wildcats today. She credited the turnaround to an extra 90 minutes of ball beating, chipping and putting above and beyond the routine team hour and a half post round practice after a disappointing opening-round 78.”
Mallory Blackwelder shaved five strokes off her score as she carded a 73. Blackwelder’s 151 (78-73 +7) secured a 52nd-place tie.
“Freshman Alyssa Randolph and junior Sara Hurwitch contributed very solid performances despite conditions that worsened as the day progressed,” Myra Blackwelder said.
Sara Hurwitch continued her consistent performance with a 75. Her cumulative 149 (74-75 +5) is good for a 35th-place tie. Freshman Alyssa Randolph currently leads the Wildcats with a cumulative 146 (72-74 +2) – good for a 15th-place tie.
Ashlee Rose follows closely behind with a 147 (70-77 +3). Rose was able to salvage her second-round score with four birdies which landed her in a tie for 23rd place. Kristin Vincent finished the day in a 75th-place tie with a cumulative score of 155 (77-78 +11).
No. 46 Kentucky claimed ninth place with a cumulative 592 (293-299 +16). The Wildcats’ 299 set them only two strokes away from host No. 9 LSU who currently holds sixth place.
Tee times begin shotgun style at 8:30 a.m. CDT on Sunday. Live scoring is available on www.golfstat.com.
