HONOLULU, Hawaii – All three doubles tandems posted victories Saturday as the No. 36 Kentucky men’s tennis squad wrapped up preseason competition against No. 55 Hawaii at the UH Tennis Center in Honolulu.
Senior Bruno Agostinelli and sophomore Brad Cox finished the weekend undefeated with an 8-5 victory over Warriors Leo Rosenberg and Jeff Fitch. UK newcomers Graeme Dyce and Eric Quigley teamed up to drop Dennis Lajola and Chad Rubin. Wildcats Alberto Gonzalez and Alex Musialek posted the other victory knocking off Craig Faulk and Spence Mendoza 8-6.
Kentucky also clinched five of seven singles matches against the Warriors.
Playing only in singles action, three Cats prevailed. Junior Alex Lambropoulos went three sets with Mendoza before claiming victory 1-6, 7-5, 6-3. Sophomore Will Beck posted a double-bagel on Rubin, winning 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Patrick Bandy surrendered just four games in a straight-set win over Faulk 6-1, 6-3.
Two other Wildcats posted singles victories as Cox doubled up Fitch 6-3, 6-3 and Gonzalez edged Sascha Heinemann 7-6, 6-7, 1-0(8). But two Warriors earned victories as well as No. 56 Lajola beat Dyce 6-0, 6-2 and Rosenberg slipped past Quigley 7-6, 7-6.
Kentucky concludes the preseason by hosting the Southeastern Conference Coaches’ Indoor Championships next weekend at Boone Tennis Center. Athletes from all 12 nationally-ranked SEC teams are expected to compete in a 64-man singles tournament and 32-team doubles bracket.
One week later, the Wildcats open the regular-season Sat. Jan. 24th in Lexington when they host a triple-header against UNC-Wilmington, Wright State and Murray State at Boone.
