On a day when the winds were gusting up to 22 miles per hour, the Kentucky men’s golf team wrapped up their fall 2008-09 season with a 17th-place finish at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational. Senior Ben Fuqua (Danville, Ky.) led the Wildcats with a three-round total 226.
Fuqua, who led Kentucky with eight birdies, fired a 72-77-77 to tie for 28th, helping Kentucky (299-310-317-926) to a 17th-place finish against an elite field, including 13 top-30 teams in the 18-team field.
“It was a tough week for our team,” coach Brian Craig said. “Traditioanlly, we play our best golf during the spring, so we are ready to rebound and get ready for a great spring season.”
Fuqua’s team-best performance in the Isleworth Invite marks the second time this fall that he has led the Wildcats in a tournament after winning the Mason Rudolph Invitational held Sept. 26-28.
Senior Andy Winings (Brownsburg, Ind.) carded a 12-over par and tied for 41st after dropping a clutch 37 pars in 54 holes.
With the lowest third-round performance at the Isleworth Invite, Wildcat junior Jordan Blann (Bowling Green, Ky.) shot a three-over-par 75 to tie for 57th.
Mads Kristensen (Denmark) and Alex Volpenhein shot a tournament 246 and 248 to finish 88th and 89th, respectively.
Overall, in four tournaments this fall Kentucky finished with two top-performances after finishing second in the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate and fourth in the Wolf Run Intercollegiate.
The Wildcats will return to action Feb. 16-17 in the Jacksonville University Invitational in Orlando, Fla. to debut their spring 2008-09 season. In the meantime stay tuned to www.UKathletics.com for upcoming news and features on the Kentucky men’s golf team.
