WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Kentucky’s number one doubles tandem, No. 16 Carolina Escamilla and Christine Johnston, and UK’s top singles player, No. 55 Megan Broderick all advance to the in the ITA Southeast Regional. The tournament continues action Saturday at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center courts.
UK’s top singles player Broderick continues tournament play in the round of 32 after defeating Tennessee’s Sam Orlin in a three set duel. Broderick faltered in the first set to the Volunteer but came back winning sets two and three for a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(6), victory. The Wildcat will take on Federica van Adrichem of Clemson during Saturday’s matches.
Kentucky newcomer Caroline Lilley began her main draw run against ETSU’s Tara Byrne. Lilley took the Buccaneer to a three set match but was unable to pull out a win. Byrne won the first set, 6-4, while the Wildcat stole the second, 7-6(2), to split the match, but Byrne outplayed Lilley in the third set for a 6-3, victory.
Greensboro, N.C., native Jennifer Stone fell to Elon’s Anna Milian in the first round of singles main draw action on Friday, 6-0, 7-5. Junior Johnston also suffered defeat in the round of 64 to Wake Forest’s Sierra Poske, 6-4, 6-1. Senior Escamilla couldn’t hold on against Vanderbilt’s Keilly Ulery, for a 6-4, 6-2, loss.
The tournament’s fourth seeded doubles team, Kentucky’s Escamilla and Johnston advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating the Tarheel’s Jocelyn Ffriend and Hanes Harris. The Wildcats outplayed the North Carolina duo, 8-5. Escamilla and Johnston face Clemson’s Keri Wong and Ida Hadziselemovic.
The UK freshmen duo of Lilley and Stone were defeated by the eighth seeded van Adrichem and Jesipa Bek of Clemson. The Tigers topped the Cats, 8-3.
