WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – After a strong performance at the June Stewart Invitation in Nashville, Tenn., the Kentucky women’s tennis team has a short turn around before heading to the ITA Southeast Regional in Winston-Salem, N.C. The tournament is hosted by Wake Forest and scheduled to begin Wed., Oct. 22 and run until Mon., Oct.
Five members of the Cats were selected for the main draw. Sophomore No. 55 Megan Broderick, juniors No. 118 Christine Johnston and Sarah Wöstmann, senior Carolina Escamilla, and sophomore Lauren Meier will begin tournament play Fri., Oct. 24. Broderick is listed as the ninth seed.
Last weekend Broderick and Johnston each advanced to the final round in their respective flights at the June Stewart Invitational but were edged out by the competition.
Wildcat freshman Caroline Lilley is listed as the number one seed in the pre-qualifying draws of the Southeast Regional tournament and is set to face Linzie Mabrey of UNC in the first round of competition scheduled at noon ET on Wed. The second round is set for 2:30 p.m. ET. Lilley recently earned two tournament championships, first at the 22nd Annual Roberta Alison Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala., and at the June Stewart Invite last weekend in Nashville, Tenn.
Greensboro, N.C., native Jennifer Stone returns to her home state as an automatic entry into the qualifying singles draw. Kentucky’s Stone begins tournament play on Thurs. at 8 a.m. ET against Natalie Baez of Louisville. Two consecutive wins will push Stone into the main draw.
The Blue and White also have three sets of doubles entered in the tournament. Seeded at number four is the nation’s No. 16 ranked duo of Johnston and Escamilla. UK’s top pair earned a first round bye and will begin match play in the round of 32. Broderick and Meier also join together to play Laura Reichert and Haley Hemm of UNC in the first group of 64. Wöstmann and Lilley team-up for a duel with Elizaveta Zaytseva and Paty Coimbra of Winthrop.
