Megan Broderick, Christine Johnston and Caroline Lilley each advance to the final rounds of match play at the June Stewart Invite in Nashville, Tenn. Two of Kentucky’s doubles teams remain undefeated.
Kentucky’s leading doubles tandem No. 16 Carolina Escamilla and Johnston earned two difficult wins Saturday morning with defeats over Vanderbilt’s Jackie Wu and Chelsea Preeg, 9-8(2), and Indiana’s Sigrid Fischer and Katya Zapadalova, 9-8(5).
The UK freshmen pair of Jennifer Stone and Lilley compiled two more victories after yesterday’s solid 8-1, win over Ernestine Koomhof and Martie Wahl of UT-Martin. Stone and Lilley defeated the Bronco’s Amanda Moccia and Jenny Nalepa, 8-3, as well as Vanderbilt’s Erica Robertson and Hannah Blatt, 8-5.
UK sophomores Broderick and Lauren Meier notched their second win of the June Stewart Invitational against Indiana’s Myriam Sopel and Lindsey Stuckey, 8-4. The Wildcat faced their first loss to Vandy’s Catherine Newman and Keilly Ulery, 8-3.
Kentucky’s top singles player, No. 55 Broderick served against Charlotte Martin of Indiana in the semifinal round. Broderick secured a ticket to the final round in a long second set, 6-3, 7-6(5). The Wildcat is set to face Preeg of Vanderbilt in the championship match.
UK’s No. 118 Johnston defeated Vandy’s Heather Steinbauer in her second three set match of the weekend. The Blue and White took and easy first set, 6-1, but fell in the second 6-4. Johnston moves on to the final round after 6-3, deciding set.
Kentucky freshman Lilley overpowered the Hoosier’s Maria Guerreiro 6-3, 6-2, in the semifinals, earning her second consecutive trip to a championship match. Lilley matches up with Carmen Pop of William and Mary on Sunday.
Sophomore Meier suffered a 6-2, 6-1, defeat to Vanderbilt’s Catherine Newman in the second round of the June Stewart. Meier will play Katarina Zoricic of the Tribe during the consolation round.
Wildcat rookie Stone found victory in a three set match against Western Michigan’s Yumi Matsuto in the back draw. Stone won 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, and will take to the service line opposite Ashley Moccia during the back draw finals. Senior Escamilla also pulled out an easy win in the back draw against Indiana’s Alba Berdala, 6-2, 6-1. Escamilla will play Ragini Archaya in the back draw finals.
The final rounds are set to begin on Sunday at 9 a.m. ET with doubles, matches to be announced. Championship singles action is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. ET.
