Athens, Ga. – It was a tale of two halves in Athens, Ga., where the UK women’s soccer team (3-9-2, 1-4-1 SEC) dropped a 3-1 affair to the Georgia Bulldogs (5-8-1, 3-2-1).
One fan’s offensive nightmare, was another fan’s defensive dream in the first half, with both teams managing just four shots, while the Bulldogs recorded the half’s lone shot on goal and corner kick.
However, the second half saw four goals and three corner kicks, unfortunately for the Wildcats the majority of the action was in the favor of Georgia.
The tide turned quickly in the second half, when UK defender Tara Herold was whistled for a foul a few feet inside the box, resulting in a penalty kick for the Bulldogs just one minute and 24 seconds into the second half. Caroline Simpson stepped up and was successful on the kick, giving Georgia a 1-0 lead.
Nicola Holdsworth tied the match in the 54th minute with her second goal of the weekend and her third on the season. The Wildcats were awarded a free kick off a Georgia foul. Ashley Stack serviced the ball in front of the Georgia goal where it was deflected over to Holdsworth, who settled the ball and poked it in from five yards out.
The Bulldogs reclaimed the lead 1:29 later when Ashley Miller controlled a loose ball and fired a shot from 15 yards out between a diving Sydney Hiance and the near post.
Georgia put an exclamation point on the match with four seconds left on the clock when Alex Hooker blasted a shot home from five yards out for the final 3-1 tally.
Holdsworth totaled three shots for the Cats, including her goal while Giuleana Lopez recorded two shots.
The Wildcats continue their road stretch next weekend, with matches at Arkansas on Friday and LSU on Sunday. For more information on Kentucky soccer, fans can go to ukathletics.com.
