LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky football kicker Tim Masthay has been named to the 2008 Allstate Good Works Team selected by the Allstate Insurance Company and the American Football Coaches Association. He is one of only 11 Division I-A players named to the team in honor of their community service.

“I’d like to thank the AFCA and everyone that voted for me to be on the team,” said Masthay, a senior from Murray, Ky. “I’ve always had tremendous support around me and so much love poured down on me. I only hope in some way that I’ve been able to love other people as much and that it is a reflection of Christ and not myself.

“I recognize as a student-athlete at Kentucky that I have a tremendous opportunity and it affords me a certain ability to be active in the community. I just try to seize that opportunity in every way possible.”

In order to meet the criteria set forth by Allstate and AFCA, each player must be actively involved and committed to working with a charitable organization, service group or community service while maintaining good academic standing. Candidates must also display sincere concern and reliability, while also having made a favorable impression on the organizations with which they are involved. Neither athletic ability nor on-the-field achievements are among the selection criteria.

Masthay has been very active in the “Cats That Care” service program during his four years as a Wildcat. With hopes to one day serve in the Peace Corps in Africa, Masthay traveled to the African country of Ghana for an educational and service trip in May, where he helped paint a school. He is a frequent volunteer at the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge, where he transports guests to and from medical appointments and answers phones. He also has volunteered and donated his time and money to several other causes across the Commonwealth, including American Cancer Society Relay for Life, FreeStore Food Bank’s 5K Hunger Run/Walk, AirOne Radio Food Drive, Save Darfur Coalition, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, and the Circles of Influence program at Southland Christian Church.

Masthay, who has been the team’s starting punter all four seasons, currently leads the team and the Southeastern Conference in punting, averaging 45.7 yards per punt. He also is the placekick holder for field goals. In the classroom, Masthay is an outstanding student who is set to graduate in May, 2009 with a degree in economics. He was a second-team Academic All-American last season and is a two-time SEC Academic Honor Roll selection.

2008 Allstate AFCA Good Works Teams®, Football Bowl Subdivision (I-A)

UK Tied for Second All-Time on Good Works Selections: Tim Masthay is the 10th Wildcat in school history to earn a spot on the National Good Works Team, tying Kentucky with Georgia for second all-time in that category.

Nebraska is the leader among the nation’s 119 Division I-A schools with 11 honorees. Georgia and Kentucky both have 10. The Good Works Team was sponsored by the College Football Association from 1992-96 and by the American Football Coaches Association from 1997-present.

Masthay joins an elite list of Wildcats who have been selected for the National Good Works Team, including Doug Pelfrey (1992), Leon Smith (1994), Kurt Supe (1996), Jimmy Carter (1998), Seth Hanson (1999), Matt Layow (2000), Antonio Hall (2002), Antoine Huffman (2004), and Jacob Tamme (2006).
