PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The University of Kentucky women’s tennis team sent four athletes to the ITA All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Kentucky’s lone senior Carolina Escamilla advanced to the round of 16 during the pre-qualifying rounds held at Pepperdine University.
Escamilla took to the service line against Caroline Bailly of Nevada during the first round of match play. The Wildcat topped the Wolf Pack with a winning tally of 6-2, 6-3. The Colombia native took her game to the round of 32 against Gabriela Mejia of Miami (Fla.). Escamilla secured her spot in the Sweet 16 with after a 7-5, 6-4, victory. UK’s senior will face McCall Harkins of Texas Christian University on Sunday.
Junior Sarah Woestmann, seeded number three, defeated Dunja Antunovic of Depaul during the round of 64. The No. 83 ranked Woestmann pulled out a tight two set win, 7-5, 7-6(4). In the round of 32, Woestmann was defeated in a heartbreaker by Duke’s Amanda Granson, 7-5, 7-6(4).
Kentucky’s junior Christine Johnston saw singles action against Miami’s (Fla.) Biance Eichkorn but fell to the Hurricane, 6-2, 6-1.
The Cats were represented in the doubles pre-qualifier by sophomore Megan Broderick and Woestmann on the court. Kentucky suffered an 8-2 defeat against Wichita State’s Stephanie Dalmacio and Lutflana Budiharto.
The final rounds of pre-qualifying singles play will take place on Sunday at Pepperdine University.
