Chapel Hill, N.C. – The UK women’s soccer team (1-3-0) could not withstand the North Carolina offensive attack, dropping a 4-0 affair to the second ranked Tar Heels (4-1-0).
The Tar Heels wasted no time getting on the board, taking a 1-0 lead 3:45 into the match. Merritt Mathias was unmarked and fired a shot from the upper right corner of the 18-yard box into the upper left corner of the goal.
UNC pushed its lead to 2-0 nearly six minutes later when Nikki Washington fed Casey Noguiera, who pushed it to the left of a diving Sydney Hiance from 15 yards out.
The Wildcats had their best scoring opportunity with 6:15 left in the first half. Rachel Ulrich found herself all alone 15 yards out, but her shot went straight at UNC goalie Anna Rodenbough.
The Tar Heels continued to apply the offensive pressure in the second half, netting two additional goals while outshooting the Wildcats 16-0 in the second 45 minutes.
UK was limited to just two shots on the afternoon, including Ulrich and Katie Fahey. The loss for UK was its worst since a 4-0 loss to Florida in last year’s SEC Tournament.
The Wildcats return to action Thursday night in Morgantown, W.Va. where they take on the 11th ranked West Virginia Mountaineers. The game will be televised on Fox Soccer Channel, with kickoff scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
