BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ? Three Kentucky athletes from the women?s tennis team were named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll the league commissioner Mike Slive announced. One freshman from the team was also named to the SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll which was announced this week by the conference media relations director DeWayne Peevy.

Rising juniors Christine Johnston (Columbus, Ohio), Whitney Spencer (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Sarah Woestmann (Wallenhorst, Germany) were all listed on the 2008 honor roll. Freshman Alaina Trgovich (Munster, Ind.) was named to the conference Freshman Academic Honor Roll.

A total of 58 University of Kentucky student-athletes earned a place on the 2008 SEC Spring Sports Academic Honor Roll and 52 student-athletes were named to the Freshman Honor Roll, the fourth-most in the league.

In order to make the honor roll, each student-athlete must 1) have a GPA of 3.00 for either the preceding academic year or have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution; 2) be on scholarship, a letter winner or have participated on a varsity team for two years if non-scholarship; 3) have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nominating institution; and 4) have been a member of the varsity team for the sport’s entire NCAA Championship segment.

Johnston led the Cats in the 2008 season, finishing with a 20-4 singles record and being ranked at No. 30 in doubles with partner Carolina Escamilla. Spencer hit singles primarily at the sixth position. Spencer?s biggest athletic moment came when she clinched the match against Ole Miss in the first round of the SEC Championship. Despite some set backs, Woestmann finished the season ranked at No. 111. She was also instrumental in pulling the Wildcats into the Second Round of the NCAA Championship. Rising sophomore Trgovich finished the year 13-9, playing prominently at the fourth position.
