Track & Field

AUBURN, Ala. ? The University of Kentucky track and field teams completed their first full day of competition at the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships at Auburn University?s Hutsell-Rosen Track Friday. After three events, the Kentucky women rank second led by a strong showing in the heptathlon while the Wildcat men stand ninth after competing in just one event thus far.

Freshman Danielle Sampley continued her amazing rookie year by setting two heptathlon records Friday after breaking the UK freshman record in the women?s 200 meter dash the evening before.

Sampley set new UK varsity and freshman records in the heptathlon finishing second overall with 5377 points breaking her previous record of 5196 set earlier this season. Junior Ashley Trimble improved upon her second-best heptathlon score in school history accumulating 5295 points. Trimble’s 800m run win propelled her from fifth to third place overall. Trimble and Sampley each earned provisional NCAA marks for their performances. Freshman Ashley Newby placed eighth overall and improved her fifth-place standing in the UK annals gathering 4784 points.

All three Wildcats set personal-best heptathlon scores and earned points for UK in the meet standings. Sampley earned UK eight points, Trimble grabbed six and Newby snatched one in the heptathlon.

The long jump was the first event of the day in the heptathlon. Sampley placed third overall with a jump of 19-6.25. Trimble placed fourth with a personal-best leap of 19-2.50 which ranks 10th all-time in the Kentucky record books. Newby jumped 17-6.75 to finish eighth.

The javelin was the second event of the heptathlon. Sampley threw a personal-best distance of 101-8 to place seventh.

In the heptathlon’s final event, Trimble sprinted out ahead of the pack in the women’s 800m run, and never looked back. Trimble won the event by over 50 yards, crossing the line in 2:14.47, her best time this season. Sampley finished second at 2:22.84, a personal-best while Newby placed seventh clocking in at 2:30.97.

The women’s hammer throw was the first scored event to be completed on the women’s side. Junior Kristin Smith threw a personal-best distance of 191-1 to claim a regional-qualifying mark and finish sixth overall. Her mark is second-best all-time at UK, just over three feet off of the varsity record. Smith claimed three points for UK.

Senior Andy Fryman earned the UK men their first points of the meet with a fourth-place finish in the men’s hammer throw. Fryman hurled the weight 212-6 earning the Cats five tallies.

In the women’s 800 meter run prelims, senior Lavera Morris won her heat and finished second overall in a time of 2:06.13, a season-best and regional-qualifying mark. Junior Jessica Ortman will join Morris in the finals after running a time of 2:06.53. Ortman’s time is a personal-best as a Wildcat and ranks sixth all-time at UK.

Junior Jose Acevedo won his heat in the men’s 200 meter dash in a time of 21.23 against a stiff headwind. As a result, Acevedo automatically qualifies for the event final Sunday evening.

Trimble capped off a successful day by qualifying for the 400m hurdles final on Sunday after finishing third in the heptathlon earlier in the day. Trimble was the top qualifier with a personal-best time of 1:00.31 earning a regional-qualifying mark and climbing up the UK all-time list to fourth.

Sophomore Katherine Peterson ran a personal-best time of 36:32.23 which ranks fourth all-time at UK in the women?s 10,000 meter run. Peterson finished ninth overall, just outside of the top eight scoring positions.

In the women’s 200 meter run prelims freshman Bianca Tyson finished 12th overall tying her personal-best time of 24.14 in a strong headwind.

The competition will resume at 1:30 p.m. ET Saturday with the women?s javelin throw and continue with the meet?s first full slate of events.

Video coverage of the Championships will be on a tape-delayed basis aired by FSN South on Sat. May 24 at 7:00 p.m. ET. Live stats will be available via link on the track and field schedule page.

A full recap of the Cats? performances will be available after competition each day on UKathletics.com.
