LEXINGTON, Ky. ? University of Kentucky track and field runners John Richardson and Andrea Halasek were named to the Southeastern Conference Good Works Team the league office in Birmingham, Ala., announced Monday. This is the second-straight year that both Halasek and Richardson have been honored by the conference for their service to the community.
Richardson logged over thirty hours of community service in the last school year. The senior served as a weekly mentor at Lexington?s Johnson Elementary and Yates Elementary and also read to children at Cassidy Elementary School. Richardson volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and worked at the UK High School Meet on campus.
At the CATSPYs this spring, the Ocean City, N.J., native won the Fifth-Third Bank Community Service Award given to the UK male athlete most dedicated to service in the community. A marketing major, Richardson is a 2007 inductee into the Frank G. Ham Society of Character, recognizing student-athletes that have gone above and beyond to fulfill the five commitments of the CHAMPS/Life Skills program consisting of academic excellence, athletic excellence, career development, personal development and community service.
Halasek spent almost 50 hours of her free time helping others. An elementary education major, Halasek served as a weekly mentor at Lexington-area schools spending time at Johnson Elementary, Lansdowne Elementary and reading to children at Cassidy Elementary School. The junior from Georgetown, Ky., worked with Habitat for Humanity last December. Last fall Halasek volunteered at the UK Children?s Hospital and later in the winter worked at the UK High School Meet.
Both Cats and their teammates will travel south this week to compete at the SEC Outdoor Championships hosted by Auburn beginning Thursday. A full recap will be available after competition each day on UKathletics.com.
