Kentucky?s junior Andy Winings was named to the 2008 All-Southeastern Conference second team on Monday. This is Winings? first All-SEC honor.
Winings played in all 11 of Kentucky?s tournaments this year and recorded nine top-20 individual finishes. The Brownsburg, Ind., native claimed the Palmas Del Mar Intercollegiate title and finished fourth in the UK Bluegrass Invitational. Four of Winings finishes this season came in the top 10.
?There is nobody that I know who is more deserving of making All-SEC than Andy Winings,? coach Brian Craig said. ?His passion for the game, his work ethic and his ability to control his emotions on the course are as good as any college player that I have ever been around.?
Winings has Kentucky?s best stroke average (72.18) on the team and carded the lowest round of any Kentucky golfer this season with a 66 at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Invitational. He finished tied for 25th at the ultra-competitive SEC championships this year.
?This is the most competitive year that I have seen in our conference which makes this accomplishment that much better. It is great to see Andy?s dedication be rewarded with this honor,? Craig said.
The University of Alabama, which has been ranked No. 1 in the country for a good part of the season, swept SEC Coach of the Year (Jay Seawell), Scholar-Athlete of the Year (Joseph Sykora) and SEC Player of the Year (Michael Thompson). Georgia freshman Harris English received Freshman of the Year honors.
