LEXINGTON, Ky. ? Harry Ulinski, former football player at the University of Kentucky and in the National Football League, passed away in Louisville on April 20 at the age of 83.

Ulinski was a standout center and linebacker at UK from 1946-49 under Coach Paul ?Bear? Bryant. He was named first-team All-Southeastern Conference in 1949 by The Associated Press and first-team All-South by Collier?s magazine. He was named SEC Player of the Week after Kentucky?s 25-0 blanking of Georgia in 1949. He played in UK?s first bowl game, a 24-14 win in the 1947 Great Lakes Bowl, and was captain of the ?49 Wildcat squad that played in the Orange Bowl. He capped his collegiate career by playing in the 1950 College All-Star Game.

Ulinski played six years in the NFL with the Washington Redskins (1950-51, 1953-56) and was an All-Pro selection one season. He finished his football career with the Ottawa Rough Riders in the Canadian Football League. After his football days, Ulinski was a salesman for Hubbell Metals and National Steel Corporation.

Born in Ambridge, Pa., Ulinski served in the United States Army Air Corps from 1943-46 before enrolling at UK. He is a member of the UK Athletics Hall of Fame and his jersey is retired at Commonwealth Stadium. He also is a member of the Ambridge, Pa., Hall of Fame and Beaver County (Pa.) Hall of Fame.

Ulinski is survived by his wife, Ann; two children, Victoria Messersmith and Chris Ulinski; and six grandchildren, including Dave Ulinski, a 2008 UK football signee.

Visitation will be Thursday from 3-8 p.m. at Foreman Funeral Home on Taylorsville Road in Louisville. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the First Unitarian Church in Louisville.
