Men's Golf

The University of Kentucky men?s golf team fired a first-round 298 (+4) to put themselves tied for eighth at the Southeastern Conference Championships at Frederica Golf Club. The Wildcats were led by senior Cale Barr (Versailles, Ky.) who carded an even-par 72.

The No. 1-ranked Alabama have a five-stroke lead over Georgia and Florida who are both tied for second place with a total team score of 290. Louisana State is fourth with a total of 292, followed by Misissippi State (293), South Carolina (294), Tennessee (296) and Ole Miss and Kentucky tied for eighth.

Alabama?s Joseph Sykora leads the individual standings with a four-under par 68.

Junior Andy Winings (Brownsburg, Ind.) fired one-over par 73 for the Wildcats in the today.

Senior Brad Doster (Winter Park, Fla.) is tied for 30th after shooting three-over par 75. Sophomores Brian Belden (Emmaus, Pa.) carded a six-over par 78 and Alex Volpenhein (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) rounds out the Cats tied for 58th after scoring an 80 for the day.

As a team the Wildcats scored 12 birdies on the day as they improved throughout the match. On the back nine Kentucky was only five-over par after being 14-over par on the front nine.

The 54-hole tournament will resume tomorrow with the second round of 18 holes of the event. Live statistics will be available on ukathletics.com and golfstat.com.
