LEXINGTON, Ky. ? After competing at four separate meets a week ago, the University of Kentucky track and field team sends a complete squad to the University of Tennessee?s Sea Ray Relays held at the Tom Black Track inside LaPorte Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn., this weekend.
The men?s decathlon and women?s heptathlon are already underway with completion scheduled for Thursday evening. A full event schedule of running and field events kicks off Friday and concludes Saturday. A live stats link for the relays will be available on the track and field schedule page at UKathletics.com.
Three Cats started competition in the heptathlon Wednesday. After four events on day one, freshman Danielle Sampley sits third overall with 3,175 points, just three tallies out of the collegiate lead. Junior Ashley Trimble is sixth (3,008) while freshman Ashley Newby is seventh (2,997). The women finish the event with the long jump, javelin throw and 800 meter run Thursday.
No. 10 Virginia Tech and No. 11 Tennessee lead a strong contingent of women?s teams from the SEC, ACC, Big Ten and BIG EAST. Ranked teams joining the Blue and White men include the host Volunteers at No. 16 and No. 17 Wisconsin among 55 collegiate teams represented.
The 2007 relays became the first in the 41-year history of the meet not to be completed, as strong thunderstorms forced the cancellation of 13 events and halted four more in progress on the final day of competition. In the shortened meet, five current Cats earned regional-qualifying marks: juniors Taylor Miller (5,000 meter run), Mikel Thomas (400-meter hurdles) and Ashley Muffet (hammer throw) along with sophomores Jenna Martin (400 meter dash) and Emily Bernhardt (hammer throw).
Last weekend Kentucky athletes tallied 13 NCAA regional-qualifying marks at three different venues.
For the men, senior Andy Fryman earned two of them at Auburn?s Tiger Track Classic. Fryman threw the hammer a personal-best distance of 209-5, 14 feet over his previous best. His throw is second-best all-time at UK, third in the SEC, seventh regionally and 12th nationally. He recorded a second regional mark for his 176-09 discus throw. Junior Chase Madison tied for first in the discus at 180-04, earning his first regional-qualifying mark as a Wildcat. His mark ranks sixth all-time at UK and tops the SEC.
At the Texas Relays, the 4x100m relay team of sophomore Kwasi Obeng and juniors Jose Acevedo, Brandon Austin and Gordon McKenzie posted a regional-qualifying time of 39.69 ? the first mark under 40 seconds in almost a decade. The time ranks fourth in the SEC, third regionally and seventh in the country.
On the women?s side, senior Lavera Morris and junior Jessica Ortman led the Cats by recording regional-qualifying marks in both the 800 and 1500 meter runs at the Stanford Invitational. Morris? 800m time of 2:06.16 is tops in the conference and Mideast Region and ranks fourth nationally. With a 1500 time of 4:27.42, Morris ranks fifth regionally. Ortman?s 1500 time of 4:26.20 is fourth in the region, while her 800m finish of 2:09.26 is fifth. Ortman?s sister Jenna also recorded a regional mark in the 1500 of 4:27.59 that ranks right behind Morris at sixth regionally. Junior Andrea Halasek broke her own varsity record in the steeplechase (10:47.65) earning another regional mark.
Also at the Tiger Track Classic, junior Emilee Strot earned two regional marks. She threw the discus 157-9, earning the ninth-best mark all-time at UK. She compiled another in the shot put with a throw of 47-8, sixth-best in the UK annals.
Finally, the 4x400m relay squad of Sampley, Trimble, Martin and freshman Jazmyn Shorter earned a regional mark after clocking in at 3:40.63 at the Texas Relays.
At Cincinnati?s Nikoloff Invite last weekend, junior Maggie Tincher set the UK women?s outdoor pole vault record at a height of 12-1.50.
