LEXINGTON, Ky. — After reaching base 16 times in 20 plate appearances last week, Kentucky junior centerfielder Collin Cowgill has received his second national honor in the past three days, as the College Baseball Foundation tabbed Cowgill as one of 16 players named to the “National All-Star Lineup”.
Cowgill, who on Monday was named the National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, is the second Wildcat to earn the weekly honor from the CBF. Fellow outfielder Sawyer Carroll earned the accolade earlier in the season after homering in four consecutive games.
During Cowgill’s monster week, he was only retired four times, reaching base 16 times in his 20 appearances at the dish. During UK?s 3-1 week, Cowgill batted .696 (9-for-13) with nine runs, four homers, seven RBI, six walks to just one strikeout, one hit by pitch and a stolen base. During UK?s series win over Mississippi State, Cowgill led the Wildcats with a .667 (6-for-9) average, hitting two homers, adding five RBI, a hit by pitch, a stolen base and six walks. In last Wednesday?s night win over Western Kentucky , Cowgill boosted two homers ? his second two homer game of the year ? going 3-for-4, with three runs and two RBI. In game one vs. MSU, the Bulldogs could not retire Cowgill, as the junior homered again, went 2-for-2 at the dish, with three walks, two runs and a steal. In the nightcap of the Saturday doubleheader with MSU, Cowgill hit a homer in his third straight game, going 3-for-6 with four RBI. Again in UK?s rubber-match win over the Bulldogs, Cowgill was not retired, reaching in five attempts, going 1-for-1 with three walks, a hit by pitch and three runs scored, including a two-out game-winning rally sparking walk to keep the inning alive.
Currently, Cowgill is riding a 10-game hit streak, during which he has batted .474 (18-for-38) with a double, six homers, 13 RBI, 10 walks, three hit by pitches and a steal. On the year, Cowgill is hitting for a .402 average, with 10 doubles, two triples, 12 home runs, 39 RBI 26 walks and 14 steals. In an epic, 12-inning win over state-rival Louisville on Tuesday, Cowgill extended his hit streak with a single and an RBI, drawing two walks as part of a 1-for-4 day.
The College Baseball Foundation, in conjunction with Diamond Sports, releases its ?National All-Star Lineup? each week, highlighting excellent achievements in the game of college baseball. Among the players tabbed this week included Missouri pitcher Aaron Crow and Florida State catcher Buster Posey, a teammate of Cowgill and UK right-hander Scott Green in the Cape Cod League this summer.
