LEXINGTON, Ky. ? After a come-back weekend, the No. 23 Kentucky (12-5 overall, 3-3 SEC) women?s tennis team will remain on the road and head to the state of Mississippi. UK is set to play No. 63 Mississippi State (7-7, 0-6) on Friday March 28 and the Rebels of Ole Miss (4-12, 0-6) on Sunday March 30. The Magnolia State teams are two of the last five SEC opponents the Cats are set to face in regular season action.
Kentucky last saw the MSU in 2007 post season action during the SEC tournament. UK came up with the win, 4-0. The Wildcats also beat the Bulldogs earlier in the regular season, 6-1. The Cats hold the advantage over the Dogs with a 27-3 all-time record. UK also claims a winning record over Ole Miss, 17-14. The Rebels visited the Bluegrass State in 2007 but fell to Kentucky, 6-1.
Most recently UK came back from a 10-day recess to face Alabama in Lexington, Ky. The Cats rolled back the Tide with a 5-2 decision last Friday. In the first outdoor match of the season, Kentucky swept doubles and kept the momentum. Securing Kentucky?s victory was SEC Freshman of the Week Megan Broderick on court two. After a dominating first set of 6-1, Broderick fell in the second bout with Paulina Bigos, 6-3. In an effort to hold back the Tide, Broderick took big strides in the third set, defeating Bama 6-2 for the fourth point.
Kentucky hopped on the road Sunday and headed to Auburn, Ala. to face the No. 30 Tigers. The Cats also defeated Auburn, 4-3. UK again won the doubles point but had to put up a fight for singles. After trading points all afternoon, the day came down to a 3-3 score with the fourth point up for grabs on court four. UK?s Christine Johnston rallied with Whitney Chappell in a first set tie break to win 7-6. Johnston brought home a 6-2 decision in the second set for the Wildcat win.
