AUBURN, Ala. — Fourth place finishes have helped advance two Kentucky divers to the NCAA Championships. Senior Kari Retrum and freshman Stephen Andrews will represent the Blue and White on the boards after qualifying for the national event this weekend at the Zone Diving Championships.
Retrum’s and Andrews’ fourth place finishes yeterday on the three-meter and one-meter, respectivley, have earned them a spot among the nation’s top talent and will compete in all three diving events.
The addition of Retrum qualifies her for the second consecutive season. The senior earned All-America honorable mention a year ago in her first appearance when she took 11th on the platform and 15th on the one-meter.
Andrews, just a freshman, will make his first career trip to the national stage. The first year diver took a bronze medal at the 2008 SEC Championships after he placed third overall on the men’s three-meter.
Today’s action saw Andrews place third on the platform event, while fellow freshman Jessie Snowden took seventh overall on the 10-meter tower.
Andrews tallied a 373.70 with his dives, while Snowden notched a 244.50 score. Snowden’s clip just missed qualifying for the NCAA Championships.
Retrum will join the women this week in Columbus, Ohio, Wed.-Sat. for the NCAA Championships. Andrews and the men will travel to Spokane, Wash., a week later to compete for the national title.
