BATON ROUGE, La. ? Led by the 2008 senior class the University of Kentucky women?s golf team sits in 11th place after 18-holes of play at the LSU/Cleveland Classic hosted by LSU in Baton Rouge Friday.
Seniors Beth Felts and Elizabeth Dotson paced the UK scoring, notching rounds of 75 and 76, respectively. Felts is tied for 15th overall on the individual leaderboard, while Dotson sits in a tie for 23rd.
Kentucky carded a team score of 308 (+20), and are currently in 11th place overall on the team leaderboard. Florida State headlines the team scores after shooting just five-over collectively. UK is just eight shots off of second-place LSU, and two-shots away from 10th place South Carolina?s total.
Junior Mallory Blackwelder carded a 78 to open play and is tied for 46th overall. Sophomore Erica Still brought a 79 in the clubhouse, as all four of the UK counted scores were under 80. Freshman Louise Ljungstedt rounded out the Blue and White?s scores as she tallied an opening day 84.
This year?s competition consists of 17 teams all of whom are ranked among the nation?s top-70 teams according to Golfweek headlined by the nation?s 10th ranked team Wake Forest. The field also includes: #26 LSU, #14 Alabama, #43 Augusta State, #65 College of Charleston, #13 Georgia, #36 Florida State, #60 Kentucky, #27 Louisville, #66 Mississippi State, #63 Ole Miss, #34 North Carolina, #41 North Carolina State, #40 UNC-Wilmington, #29 South Carolina, #44 Central Florida, #28 Virginia.
The teams will play 18 holes for three days at the University Club. The course is a par-72 that measures in 6,424 yards. Saturday tee times begin at 8 a.m. CDT off of tees one and 10. Sunday?s round will be a shotgun start beginning at 8:30 a.m. CDT. In the 2007 addition of the tournament.
Play at the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic began in 1982, when the original tournament was named LSU-Fairwood Invitational. Host LSU has won the tournament a record seven times in the 26-year history.
