LEXINGTON, Ky. — A school-record five Kentucky women?s basketball players were named to the All-Southeastern Conference team for the 2007-08 season, the league office in Birmingham, Ala., announced Tuesday. Two were named to the second team, two were selected to the All-SEC freshman team and one was honored as the Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Senior guard Chelsea Chowning (Berea, Ky.) was named UK?s first SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year after earning a 4.00 grade point average in the school?s prestigious College of Pharmacy. She is on track to graduate in 2010 with a doctorate in pharmacy. The 6-0 lefthander also became UK?s first Academic All-American when she was named to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America third team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). She has been named to the Dean?s List and UK?s Athletics Director Honor Roll as well for her perfect GPA.

Second-team picks included seniors Sarah Elliott (McKee, Ky.) and Samantha Mahoney (Detroit). Elliott, named to the second-team for the second straight year, is second on the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 10.6 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. She holds the school record for blocks in a career (179) and currently ranks ninth on UK?s all-time scoring list (1,458) and fifth in rebounding (778).

Mahoney, a three-time second-team selection, has started in each of Kentucky?s 28 games this season. She is the team?s leading scorer with 13.2 points per game, which ranks 11th in the SEC in scoring (all games). Mahoney has scored in double figures 19 times this season, including three consecutive and has climbed to No. 5 on UK?s career chart with 1,523 points.

Freshmen Victoria Dunlap (Nashville, Tenn.) and Amber Smith (Winter Haven, Fla.) were selected to the All-SEC Freshman team. Dunlap is one of just three freshmen in the SEC to start in every regular-season contest this season (UT?s Angie Bjorklund and Georgia?s Angela Puleo are the other two). She currently leads UK in rebounding, averaging 6.5 boards per game, including 6.9 in conference play. Dunlap also is the team?s third-leading scorer with 7.2 points per game. Smith, who went down with a season-ending knee injury during the Tennessee game on Feb. 3, started in 14 of 21 games. Prior to her injury, Smith was leading the team in steals and assists in SEC play and ranked second on the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 9.4 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. Their selections mark the first time since the 2004-05 season that two UK players were selected to the freshman team, when Elliott and Mahoney were each chosen.

This is the fifth straight season UK has had at least one player selected to the All-SEC teams.
