LEXINGTON, Ky. ? Freshman Megan Broderick of the UK women?s tennis team was named SEC Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday morning.
On Saturday Feb. 16, the Wildcats traveled to Clemson, S.C., to play the No. 18 Clemson Tigers. Despite the loss of the doubles point, UK managed five singles wins to upset Clemson. Broderick was instrumental in the upset of the Tigers, beating out Clemson?s Alexandra Luc, 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 5 position.
Kentucky then headed to Atlanta, Ga., for a match against No. 1 Georgia Tech on Sunday. UK fell 6-1 to the top ranked team; Broderick provided the only point for the Wildcats against the Yellow Jackets? No. 38 Christy Striplin, 1-6, 6-3, 10-6, at the No. 3 singles position. Broderick?s point may not have won the match, but it did not allow a sweep of Kentucky and showed the talent on the team.
Broderick has been a strong player at all positions throughout this season. She has an 8-1 singles record for the season. She is also undefeated at the No. 2, 3, 4, and 5 singles spots.
This is the second week in a row a player on the Kentucky women?s tennis team has received a conference honor. Last week sophomore Christine Johnston received SEC Player of the Week. This is Broderick?s first SEC honor.
