CLEMSON, S.C. ? Kentucky women?s tennis team (7-1 overall, 0-0 conf.) traveled to Clemson, S.C. (3-5, 0-0) for their second road match of the season Saturday, Feb. 16. The No. 29 Kentucky Wildcats defeated No. 18 Clemson, 5-2. The Cats extend their all-time record against the Tigers to 8-3.
The Wildcats lost doubles at No. 1 and No. 2 but won at No. 3. Freshman pair of Alaina Trgovich and Lauren Meier beat Clemson?s Alexandra Luc and Kathryn Gerber, 8-6. This was Meier?s first match of the season. Despite the loss of the doubles point, the team pulled together to win, taking five of six singles matches.
Sophomore Christine Johnston, who earned SEC Player of the Week Feb. 12, remains undefeated in singles, winning at No. 2 singles against Clemson?s Estefania Balda, 6-3, 6-1. Sophomore No. 69 ranked Sarah Woestmann pulled out the win in a 2-6, 6-2, 10-2, decision with Tiger #53 Federica van Adrichem.
Trgovich played at No. 1 for the second match in a row but suffered her first loss of the season to the Tiger?s No. 4 Ani Mijacika, 6-3, 6-2. Meier was successful in her first singles match of 2008, tallying 6-0, 6-4, against Clemson?s Gerber.
?Today was a great team effort,? said Assistant Coach Lyndsay Shosho. ?We showed a lot of toughness and team unity.?
This was the second time this season the Cats were able to come back from a deficit at the start of a match.
