LEXINGTON, Ky.? Senior diver Kari Retrum has been named the SEC Female Diver of the Week as chosen by the league offices Tuesday.
Retrum helped guide the Wildcats to a dual-meet concluding win over Cincinnati on Saturday, with season-high scores on both boards in her final meet at the Lancaster Aquatic Center. Retrum posted a 297.65 clip on the one-meter, a score that qualifies for the NCAA Zone Diving trials and is the sixth best mark in the SEC rankings. Additionally, her point total of 323.03 on the three-meter was a season-best mark, the fourth best tally in the conference this season and a Zone qualifying score.
The Noblesville, Ind., accounted for two of the 12 individual wins by a senior on Senior Day helping the Wildcats stay perfect against their border-state rival.
This is the first weekly honor of Retrum?s career. She was the 2004 SEC Freshman Diver of the Year after winning the platform event in her first season. The weekly honor is the second this season for the Wildcats, as freshman Jessie Snowden earned the award in the first week of the season after winning three events in her first career weekend.
Retrum?s honor is the fifth such weekly award in school history. In addition to Snowden?s award earlier this season, former divers Taryn Ignacio and Joey Brown each earned the award once in the 2004-05 season, while Brown earned the nomination as a senior in the 2006-07 season.
Under Head Coach Mike Lyden?s tutelage, Kentucky divers have achieved unprecedented success. Lyden is currently the reigning back-to-back-to-back SEC Women?s Diving Coach of the Year and has guided his athletes to 13 SEC Championships including seven titles in the last three seasons.
Retrum and the lady Wildcats return to the pool Wed., Feb. 20, in Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the 2008 SEC Championships.
