Kentucky point guard Amber Smith (Winter Haven, Fla.) was named the Southeastern Conference?s Freshman of the Week after averaging 7.5 points and 3.3 assists in two games last week.
The rookie earned a spot in the starting lineup against No. 23 Old Dominion and scored a career-high 11 points vs. the Lady Monarchs. She tied her career high with two three-pointers, going a perfect 2-for-2 from beyond the arc and also swatted a career-best two blocks in UK?s 10-point win over South Alabama.
Smith has started four of 10 games this season, including two consecutive at point guard. Overall, she averages 5.5 points per game and ranks second on the team in assists (30) and third in steals (13).
This is the third year the SEC has recognized a Freshman of the Week award. The weekly award marks UK?s second this season as Victoria Dunlap received the honor on Nov. 28.
