LEXINGTON, Ky.? University of Kentucky freshman diver Stephen Andrews has been named the SEC Freshman Performer of the Week as chosen by the league offices Tuesday.
Andrews has enjoyed phenomenal success in his opening season with the Wildcats, placing second or better in every diving event this season. The Coral Springs, Fla., native captured wins on the one-meter and three-meter in Kentucky?s loss to Florida last Thursday helping him earn the conference nomination.
His one-meter clip of 343.73 was a personal best mark, as well as a qualifying score for Zone Diving while bettering the field by more than 100 points. Furthermore, the impressive score placed him third all-time in UK record books.
On the three-meter he notched a score of 292.05 to edge out teammate Justin Smith by five points. Andrews tallied a 351.00 score one the three-meter earlier in the season in the Wildcats win over Louisville.
This marks the first such honor in Andrews? young career. The last male swimmer or diver for Kentucky to earn a weekly SEC honor was swimmer Steven Manley who captured the SEC Swimmer of the Week nod in Feb. 2005.
For the third consecutive week a UK swimmer or diver has captured a weekly honor given out by the league offices. Freshman diver Jessie Snowden earned SEC Diver of the Week in the first week of competition, while last week senior swimmer Jenny Bradford was named SEC Swimmer of the Week.
Kentucky?s divers will take part in the Hoosierland Open hosted by Indiana this weekend, while the swimmers will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., for their annual tilt at the Nike Cup.
